Build Mode allows you to place individual building pieces down to create bases, structures and shelters. You can also place workstations/furnishings!
Accessing Build Mode
To access Build Mode, you'll first have to either:
- Speak to Doric during the tutorial and learn how to create a Crafting Table
- Scavenge your first resource
With Build Mode unlocked you can access it anytime by hitting B. When you start building, you'll only be able to use basic Tier 1 (or Brynmoor) building pieces.
Using Build Mode
When in Build Mode you'll see a menu containing an overview of what you're currently able to craft. You can filter through the different categories using Q and E.
Hovering over each item will display the resource requirements to create it and give you a preview of what the piece/item will look like once you do.
Whilst in Build Mode, you can also toggle between Repair Mode and Ghost Mode at will.
- Repair Mode - T
- Allows you to repair damaged buildings and add materials to incomplete structures. Also allows you to delete existing pieces/items and reclaim spent resources
- Ghost Mode - F
- Allows you to place blueprints that you can complete later by adding the required materials. Blueprints don't cost anything to place - use this tool to plan your base for the future!
When you're ready to get building, click the structure/furnishing you want to build; you'll see a transparent preview of that piece appear in front of you. Use the mouse and WASD to move the piece to the desired position. You can also use following hotkeys to make more precise movements:
- Scroll-wheel - Rotate
- CTRL + Scroll-wheel - Move Up/Down
- ALT + Scroll-wheel - Move Backwards/Forward
Tip | You can't just build anywhere. Make sure your building is stable enough to support itself - buildings are more stable the closer they're built to the ground!
Whilst positioning the preview it will appear as either green or red depending on whether or not you can place the item it in it's current position.
- Green - the item can be placed in it's current position
- Red - the item cannot be placed in it's current position. It's either colliding with another object, isn't connected to the ground/other building pieces, or you lack the required resources
Tip | Most building pieces will snap to an appropriate position when placed next to another building piece. To turn this off, hit Y and enable Free Placing mode.
Once you've got everything lined up just right, Left-Click to place your item in it's current position!
Supporting your building
As you build bigger and more complicated structures, you'll need to use more supports to keep everything stable and strong. Make sure you make regular use of Beams and Pillars to ensure longevity!
